Based on memories of an artists’ residency in the suburbs of Chicago, Commune squeezes a mass of nearly identical housing blocks into a dense hive-like structure. The typical open space of the suburbs is replaced by a vibrant concentration. Seeming as if it could grow infinitely, the jumbled assemblage recalls both Chinese scholar’s rocks and the modernist residences of Moshe Safdie’s Habitat.
