Enclave is a sculptural exploration of the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. Compressing information from a variety of sources, the piece uses a shifting scale and expressive color choices to move away from a literal rendering and toward a more complicated, evocative experience of place. The sculpture abstracts the neighborhood’s dramatic topography into a series of overlapping and interlocking planes held aloft by thin wooden dowels. Thousands of laminated blocks are stacked and positioned on each plane to suggest apartment buildings and homes. With its sprawling form, Enclave blurs the distinction between static object and unfolding environment. |
